50 years anniversary of Kyokushin Karate

 1964. Japan. Tokyo. Ikebukuro.

50 years ago a new Mas. Oyama dojo was  opened and the name Kyokushinkai was introduced to the karate community. The great history of strenght, pride and glory has began. We decided to honor this anniversary and bring this memorable moment to our training uniform (black hood jacket and long trousers).  It will be available at our shop shortly before the end of the year 2014.

Kyokushinkai Karate Embroidery

We like the idea to have embroidered Japanese calligraphy on our t-shirts or jackets. It can easily be done by taking some random images from internet but nobody can guarantee the quality, proper form of calligraphy and their meaning.

Our idea to make our jackets with embroidered Kyokushinkai Karate calligraphy begins with the art work of Masakazu Miyanaga - Japanese painter and calligraphy master who made artistic drawings for our designs.

Calligraphies were painted on special paper which doesn’t absorb ink and let the ink dry.  And it was just the beginning of the transformation process from the ink calligraphy to the final embroidery on our jackets. An important part of making calligraphies is to know the sequence of drawings, proportion and directions of movements. There are rules which make calligraphy perfect and knowing these rules together with manual, artistic skills make calligraphy not only readable but also beautiful.

So, to know the sequence was an important message to our computer designer to write the program which can reflect these rules and make our designs special. Every beat of the needle with thread shows the direction of the brush flow and makes the embroidery special.

Kyokushin Kata Book by Hanshi Steve Arneil

‘Kyokushin Kata Book’ by hanshi Steve Arneil, published in 1985, is the only valid kata interpretation manual that was recognized and approved by Kyokushinkai founder, Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. Due to his knowledge, experience, and skills, Hanshi Arneil was chosen by Sosai Oyama to prepare an official compilation of the kyokushin kata and to have it published in a book form.

Of course there are many other books, videos, or DVDs available on the market, yet they fundamentally differ from the original, primary kata version which was presented by the hanshi for the needs of all Kyokushin students at the time when there was only one Kyokushinkai IKO organization.

Hanshi Arneil’s book is a milestone in the history of Karate Kyokushin.

Kata is the most important element of the karate tradition. They shouldn’t be freely altered, but instead they must be practiced and performed with a comprehension which is essential to discovery of the depth they carry. This is the only way to the preservation of the Kyokushinkai tradition. Hanshi Arneil’s book received its second edition in 2004. Some of its fragments were rewritten, hence allowing for an improved understanding and presentation of the material and the cover was also redesigned. Its most essential content, however, remains unchanged and the same - none of the book’s kata was modified or revised.

And right now, almost thirty years later, after publishing the first edition of kata book, we are just about to get the completely redone third edition. Great! Here is the link to the kata book blog page:

Benefits of compression sportswear

Every year, every season professional sports are becoming more and more competitive. The battle for milimeters, split of seconds is getting harder and harder. This is why the latest technology and modern science is in common use to improve professional athlete performance.  One of the huge factors which helps to improve athletic performance is special, multifunctional sportswear.

Compression clothes is one of them. Well researched, with proven medical effect, compression clothes worn on the legs can help prevent deep vein thrombosis, reduce swelling, improve blood and lymph circulation, especially while sitting for a long time or traveling.

In Martial Arts, especially in MMA, compression t-shirts and underwear is worn during exercise to prevent chafing and rashes. Therefore, compression t-shirts worn under the Karate-Gi is a great idea.

compression tshirt

This type of clothing which fits to the anathomical shape of the body, firmly compressing the joints and the muscles, helps to stabilize them and improves their stability and prevents injuries.

It is also researched and proven that muscles and joints enhance better and faster their mobility while being gently compressed.

On top of it, compression t-shirt keeps the body warm. Even sweating excessively, with compression t-shirt, you don’t get the feeling that your body is wet.  It doesnt absorb water and transports it outside.  It dries fast, so it is also easy to wash and get ready to use for the next training session the same day.

Faster joint and muscle recovery and relieve muscle and joint stiffness and soreness is another reason of wearing compression clothes, this time after the training. We will introduce our own Karate-Outfit compression t-shirt from November 2014, dedicated to karate fighters.

Yuan Ming Yuan - The Old Summer Palace in Beijing

North West from Beijing centre, app 30-40 minutes’ drive by underground, there is one of the most beautiful places in the Chinese capital. It is called Yuan Ming Yuan. It is a huge park complex with a beautiful system of lakes, pounds, canals and pedestrian alleys. Lakes are quite shallow because they are made by hand by Chinese people. The ground digged out from these lakes were used to form the landscape: small hills and valleys. Shallow lakes allow to grow huge amount of lotus. Right now, in July, is the lotus festival and the lotus flowers are in full blossom in a dazzling array of colours and shapes.

The park was opened to the public in the late 1980‘s! For more than 120 years, until 1988, this area was abandoned and wild. A place with a remarkable history was just forgotten for over 100 years before it became a public park.

Why? This is the story…

Taichi in Beihai Park (Beijing)

My genuine mission in Beijing was to have my personal experience with local Chinese training Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Therefore I have decided to go to Beihai Park, located behind the Forbidden City. Another beautifully created park with artificial lakes, islands and hills where you find peace and harmony.

I entered through the north gate and headed to the Temple of Five Dragons where I was following a middle aged man who looked he would probably train tai chi as he was wearing the typical loose pants. I saw him entering the temple for a short prayer then I followed him further to the site of the Nine Dragon Screen (wall) where I noticed other people training with weapons, playing badminton and ???
