‘Kyokushin Kata Book’ by hanshi Steve Arneil, published in 1985, is the only valid kata interpretation manual that was recognized and approved by Kyokushinkai founder, Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. Due to his knowledge, experience, and skills, Hanshi Arneil was chosen by Sosai Oyama to prepare an official compilation of the kyokushin kata and to have it published in a book form.
Of course there are many other books, videos, or DVDs available on the market, yet they fundamentally differ from the original, primary kata version which was presented by the hanshi for the needs of all Kyokushin students at the time when there was only one Kyokushinkai IKO organization.
Hanshi Arneil’s book is a milestone in the history of Karate Kyokushin.
Kata is the most important element of the karate tradition. They shouldn’t be freely altered, but instead they must be practiced and performed with a comprehension which is essential to discovery of the depth they carry. This is the only way to the preservation of the Kyokushinkai tradition. Hanshi Arneil’s book received its second edition in 2004. Some of its fragments were rewritten, hence allowing for an improved understanding and presentation of the material and the cover was also redesigned. Its most essential content, however, remains unchanged and the same - none of the book’s kata was modified or revised.
And right now, almost thirty years later, after publishing the first edition of kata book, we are just about to get the completely redone third edition. Great! Here is the link to the kata book blog page: http://www.kyokushin-katabook.com/
